Water Polo Rules
So... are there any rules to water polo? What goes on under water stays under water? What ever the ref doesn't see doesn't count? Why is that guy climbing all over our guy and getting away with it? After watching your first game of water polo, you just might find yourself asking these questions. The short answer to the question is, "Yes, there are rules to water polo." The rules that apply depend on the level of play and the type of competition. At the high school level in Michigan, water polo is governed by the Michigan Water Polo Association (MWPA). The rules applied to the sport are created by the
National Federation of High Schools (NFHS).
The NFHS does not publish a copy of their water polo rules on-line but does sell copies of rules for water polo on their website. Water polo rules can be found in a combined booklet with the rules for swimming and diving on the NFHS website. However, there is some interesting free information available at the NFHS site regarding:
NFHS 2008-09 Rule Changes
NFHS Points of Emphasis for Coaches and Officials 2008-09
Differences between NFHS and NCAA Water Polo Rules
Collegiate water polo is governed by
NCAA Water Polo Rules.
The Water Polo
Junior Olympics
will be governed by the rules of
USA Water Polo (UASWP)
, most likely with some modification to account for the intensive tournament format of the Junior Olympics competition.
