Okemos Polo Fine-Tunes For Run at State Title

The Okemos boys water polo team's 14-3 win Monday over the combined Holt/East Lansing team ties Okemos' record of 25 wins, with one regular-season game remaining.

Holt/East Lansing is in its second year, and as a developing team, provided Okemos with an opportunity to make full use of its deep and talented bench. Scoring by a host of players ( Greg Mankowski with three goals, Sam Marsh with four, Andrew Fandialan with two, Landon Lefler with one, Jon Geva with four and Kyle Barrett, one), along with solid defense and goal-tending provided evidence of a team ready and primed for the post season.

Holt/East Lansing does not have a complete junior varsity team, so the combined varsity-junior varsity played a separate game against the Okemos junior varsity. Holt/East Lansing pulled out a 9-8 win, as Okemos saw its 8-to-5 halftime advantage slip away in the third and fourth quarters and Holt/East Lansing posted four unanswered second-half goals.

Wednesday's final regular-season game, at Ann Arbor Pioneer, will be a true test of Okemos' readiness for a run at a state championship title, starting with Districts Oct. 17.

Okemos prevailed over Pioneer at home last year, with a 7-to-6 victory in overtime. Okemos and Pioneer have not met yet this year in regular-season competition, and Wednesday night’s game promises to be very physical and exciting -- top-notch water polo.
